If haproxy on a t2.micro instance can meet your needs and lowers your overall costs, then by all means go with it.

The various instance sizes in AWS have bandwidth limitations. t2.micro instances are probably fine for now but if you ever get really popular, you might have to swap out for bigger instance types.

Some of the other Ubuntu-based distros were far worse. Ubuntu MATE was pretty simple by comparison.

it's often written by people with zero design skills.
