this is always something I've struggled with. As someone with the know-how to actually set up my own content servers and the like, it's still more effort than I want to expend, and for what benefit? The masses still use Faceborg and the like.

I've come to a few conclusions:

  1. Most people don't care about owning their content.
  2. Even if they did care about owning their content, how much of it is actually worth saving? ?
  3. The only way to change the status quo is to make it dirt simple for people to do so while allowing inter operation with the Faceborgs of the world. The technology is trending that way, but we have a ways to go before the average person can go into a store, buy, and operate such a solution without turning into a geek.
