which is why I buy iPhones, or if I have to buy Android, not from an operator (not an option for Verizon or Sprint, sadly).

I assume that means you're on Verizon? I am curious how the software updates will work in practice, especially since Verizon generally sucks about those sorts of things.

yeah, and they're occasionally a mystery to those of us who know them, too. One of my WiFi routers is refusing to let me update the firmware. And yes, I will have to do some "unnatural" shit to make that happen--stuff I'm comfortable doing, but still. :P

US Telcos and Cable companies qualify as "scummy businesses." Our regulators are too busy sucking the lobbying teat to do anything about it.

//

@kdfrawg it's not THAT difficult to do in many cases. Mostly just about checking compatibility.

//

at least the airlines aren't like US Telcos and Cable companies. They advertise one price and use "below the line" fees to jack up the price so you have no idea what you'll pay until you see the bill.

TFW someone else actually uses your framework and produces a reasonable result.

pretty much ALL vendors of consumer-grade routers put shit firmware on their equipment. I refuse to buy unless I can load DD-WRT or similar on it.

@kdfrawg "idiocracy" :P

//

@kdfrawg yeah, they do lovely stuff like not credit you for miles flown (but rather what you paid and your status) and generally find every excuse to prevent you from getting status.
