You know it's probably bullshit when Procter and Gamble is cutting $200 million from their digital ad spending [adweek.com]. All that data and Facebook and Twitter can't figure out how to make effective use of it.

Makes me question just how effectively Trump and Obama were actually able to make use of all that data.

//

In Obama's case, they got the data through users who used the Obama Facebook app. Back in 2012, the Facebook API was pretty much an open book, coughing up whatever data you asked for. Obama's campaign also used the data it has collected right up to Election Day.

In Trump's case, they got the data indirectly through Cambridge Analytica, which had been collecting the data for various purposes. Trump's campaign used some of the data prior to the General Election campaign, but not during.

From what I can tell, Obama made extensive use of more data, and was called brilliant. Trump, meanwhile, is demonized for more limited use of less data.

now to respond to the correct post… :P

Certainly on the surface, the way Obama and Trump used the data looks similar. The fact no one is pointing this out is telling.

//

oh, you're right. Must have hit "reply" on the wrong post. :P

//

I'm not equating the two as the same thing. That's why I listed them separately. Granted, just about every "reply" post has a mention in them, but not every root/origin post will have mentions.

//

I can create an origin post with mentions, so… no.

//

I see a couple of different settings:

  1. Only sending "origin" or "root" posts.
  2. Not sending a post with mentions

That's the obvious, low-hanging fruit. Personally, I'm using the Workflows I built to post when I want to propagate the formula across multiple social networks…

Now you're doing so in two places at once. :P

what's worse is that it was ok that Obama used that data for campaigning but not ok that Trump did.

And yes, the system was open with your data by design. Still is, but not nearly as bad as it was in 2010.

you know what they say about pleasing everyone… you can't. Do what will bring you closer to your goal.
